In September 2008, a month after we'd become members with Wycliffe Bible Translators, Glenda and I took the boys to Rumford, ME for Missions at the Airport. JAARS was there with a short take off and landing plane and a helicopter. While we were there I took the opportunity to purchase a JAARS baseball cap.
Summer 2009 has been the wettest Summer in memory. Several weeks ago as I was headed out the door I put on my JAARS cap to keep the rain off my glasses. My first stop of the day was the Post Office. As I pulled out the mail from our PO Box I noticed a yellow slip indicating that I had to visit the window to get a package that couldn't fit in my box.
The postman at the window noticed my hat and asked, "Do you fly for JAARS?" A little surprised I replied, "No. I'll be working in IT Engineering for JAARS very soon. You know JAARS?" He said, "Oh sure. Our church has supported a missionary couple with Wycliffe who have been at JAARS for quite a while." He asked me if I knew them and to my surprise I did! In fact, I had worked with their son at a dot-com in Florida. We remarked about how small the world was and I went on my way.
A week later I was in the post office buying stamps and Doug was at the window again. I asked him about his church and whether he thought I should give the pastor a call. He said that he had already mentioned me to the pastor and encouraged me to call him.
Several days later I was able to connect with the pastor who asked me to send him some information about us and our ministry AND invited me to speak at their Thursday evening prayer meeting a few weeks later.
Last Thursday I spoke at Berean Baptist Church and was able to tell them the story of how God used a baseball cap to bring us together. How awesome is our God!
